DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1 – Andes to Amazon Transition
Early morning pick-up in Quito. We drive east across the Andes, stopping at key locations such as Papallacta Pass to photograph high-altitude species.
As we descend into the Amazon basin, we will look for new bird species along the way. We will arrive at the lodge in the afternoon. Among the amazing hummingbird species found here are the Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Blue-mantled Thornbill, and Viridian Metaltail. Other exciting bird species in this area include the Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant, Bar-bellied Woodpecker, White-chinned Thistletail, Many-striped Canastero, Páramo Seedeater, Bar-winged Cinclodes, and Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager.
Once we have crossed the pass, we will drive directly to the beautiful Cayambe-Coca Forest. Here we will enjoy a delicious box lunch. Afterward, we will explore the area in search of the Masked Mountain-
Tanager, Golden-crowned Tanager, Lacrimose Mountain-Tanager, Black-backed Bush-Tanager, Black-capped Hemispingus, Pale-naped Brush-Finch, Spectacled Whitestart, Red-crested Cotinga, and more.
Finally, we descend to Guango Lodge, where we can visit the hummingbird feeder stations and see brand-new species such as the Tourmaline Sunangel, Glowing Puffleg, Collared Inca, Long-tailed Sylph, and Chestnut-breasted Coronet.
At 3:00 PM, we transfer to Limoncocha Eco-lodge in the Amazon area.

Day 2 – Amazon Lowlands Birding
Bird Photo: Parrot & Macaw Photography Hide & Amazon Canopy Towers
We’ll start the day with bird photography atop another fabulous canopy tower rising 60 meters (195 feet). Species we may encounter include Wire-tailed Manakin, Bare-necked Fruitcrow, Great Jacamar, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, Many-banded Aracari, Ivory-billed Aracari, Red-necked Woodpecker, Golden-green Woodpecker, Pink-throated Becard, Black-faced Dacnis, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, Slate-colored Hawk, White-browed Purpletuft, Black-tailed Trogon, White-necked Puffbird, Pied Puffbird, Chestnut Woodpecker, Gilded Barbet, Lemon-throated Barbet, and many more.
We’ll also enjoy the sounds of monkeys and other wildlife emerging from the never-ending Amazon jungle. After another superb session of bird photography atop the higher stratum of the forest, we will start walking to a
will visit a fabulous parrot and macaw photography hide. Lettered Aracari, Cobalt-winged Parakeets, Orange-cheeked Parrots, and Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlets descend to drink fresh spring water from a small stream right in front of our hide. Scarlet Macaws will also come down to quench their thirst, sometimes with up to 16 individuals at once!
We will enjoy our boxed lunch inside the photography hide while waiting for this amazing show.

Day 3 – Canopy Tower & Wildlife Exploration

After breakfast, we will take a motorboat to navigate down the Napo River and approach the Parrot Clay Lick. Here, we will look for very large flocks of Orange-winged Parrots, Spangled Cotinga, Yellow-crowned Parrots, Black-capped Parrot, Red-bellied Macaw, Dusky-billed Parrotlet, Dusky-headed Parakeet, and Blue-headed Parrot feeding on the clay wall.
Next, we will visit another canopy tower, where the following species are easier to photograph: Gilded Barbet, Black-headed Parrot, Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, Spangled Cotinga, Plum-throated Cotinga, Purplish Jacamar, Blue-and-Yellow Macaw, and—if we are lucky—the Harpy or Crested Eagle.

Day 4 – Return to Quito

After breakfast, we will continue bird photography using a wide motor canoe. We will slowly photograph along the edges of this massive lagoon, which is crowded with wildlife.
One of the target birds in this area is the bizarre Horned Screamer, sometimes referred to as the “unicorn bird,” which is fairly common here but very rare elsewhere. We will also photograph several other birds, including Hoatzin, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Agami Heron, Least Bittern, White-eared Jacamar, Wattled Jacana, Azure Gallinule, Ecuadorian Cacique, Scarlet-crowned Barbet, Red-capped Cardinal, Snail Kite, Yellow-headed Caracara, White-fronted Nunbird, Rufous-and-green Kingfisher, Laughing Falcon, and many other lagoon-specialist species.
Several monkey species can also be photographed along the lagoon’s edge, including the Squirrel Monkey.
We may also encounter monkeys along the lagoon, including the world’s smallest monkey species, the Pygmy Marmoset.
After lunch, we will begin our return to Quito city or Mariscal Sucre Airport (approximately 5 hours).
